Idea Journal Submission #4:

Spatial Transportation Contexts

Enviromental wayfinding
In one of the case studies in "An Introduction to Information Design" author suggests that we learn spacial awareness through a series of stages. First, we learn certain places, then how to get from one place to another and finally our brains learn the area after experiencing a collection of routes.
Brain's Learning Process
Thus, author suggests, one of the important aspects of designing spacial respresentation such as city map is to empaze popular places first, then popular routes and then areas.

Organic way to implement pointers/ arrows in enviromental inforamtion design
One of the case studies showcased the original implementation of arrow/ pointers into the architecture of the building. Usually the arrow/ pointers are either stickers or signs. In this case, however the arrows were implemented into the walls as part of the architecture. They were made from the same material as the wall and painted the same colour, the shape was made to gradually flow to into the wall.
