Idea Journal Submission #2:

Packing and Labelling of Technology Products.

Choosing color
According to the readings, color patterns often makes consumers recall certain experiences such as yellow/ black pattern may resemble bees, which usually carry memories of danger for the general population (Coates). As such tech products such as construction equipment is often in yellow/ black color scheme (Coates).

On the other hand, if the technology is packaged into unnatural colors or colors that are rare for regular consumers such as monolith black or neon green, it could communicate futuristic aspects of the technology product.

In addition, the author recommends not using any more than three or four colors as it becomes difficult to recall. Also, creating contrast between colors by choosing  colors at least one or two shades apart from each other on the color wheel, it will help to tell them apart easier for the consumer (Coates). On top of that it is important to consider how the color choices will play out in the environment where technology product will be sold: how lights or sunlight influences perception of the color, color combination and contrast with the background (Coates).

It is also interesting to note that many big technological companies only use one color in their branding and shades of grey.

Typography
  • Limit font size variation to three to keep functional and attractive design (Coates).
  • Don't write in all capital letters as it makes the text less readable (Coates).
  • "Serif faces have more in common with traditional or luxury values, having a sense of history and integrity to them. Sans serifs are modern and uniform and so lend themselves to more functional purposes."(Coates).
  • For left-alligned text aim for consistent line endings (Coates).
  • Dont use a combination of italics and bold since it leads to confusion (Coates).
  • "When using more than one typeface, aim to employ maximum diferentiation between the fonts (Coates).

It also makes sense to use font sizes that are proportional to one another. This will give a more pleasing fell to the front, eliminates guesswork from choosing sizes and gives options to better express the visual hierarchy.

Graphics/ Functionality
It is a good idea to remove extra steps from interactions with technological products on the web store. For example, the galleries on the websites often require lots of clicks to browse or enlarge. By removing the clicks and adding zoom on hover, for example, the presentation of the product becomes more user friendly.

In case lines are used in the design they should lead the eye to a specific end point (Coates). Dashed line signify movement, while curved lines are used to create forms (Coates). â€‹
