Wk7 Journal - Book Cover
Idea
Idea:
The idea behind the cover supposed to be a story about a man who sells his dreams to an agency that buys dreams from thousands of people for a moderate fee. They buy just a written explanation or a drawing of dreams from people. They intend to use the ideas or elements from these dreams for their own commercial projects. The plot then follows the main character who, in pursuit for money, tries to have as vivid dreams as possible, takes drugs and ventures into nightmares. Eventually his live goes downhill because of this.

Some intial ideas:

> High contrast. Black, white and red colours often used for violent dramas.
> Modern, clear typefaces
> The glass and the pill is in black and white to signify how this is a routine, job. While the dollar notes have colour to signify the importance and joy it brings to the character.

Unfortunatly, I did not find a particularly influencial cover that would relate to my idea, but the typeface used for the "Limitless" (2011) was the closest one to what I was looking for this project.

Feedback from peers:

> "Maybe the glass is not in center but to the side"
> "Add a red line to the background as if the shares are fallening"
> "Tagline: "The live he lives destroyes from within""
> "Add eye reflection of the tired main character"
> "Make the title scratched"
> "Pen name: Bud Fox"

Some of these ideas were expressed in variants seen in section "Working with peer's critique" below.
Design process (Press on or hover over the photos to see more details)
Initial idea for the cover. Intention was to create a high contrast cover with limited amount of colours used.
Photo used for the project
Image was cropped and horizon line adjusted
Image from the internet for the background. Was looking for something with cracks to add to the meaning and could be an interior wall.
Combining two images. The lighting had to be adjusted to eliminate overly bright spots. The glass was dissaturated to add meaning that it is a routine job.
"Simplifica" typeface was similiar to the "Limitless" (2011) typeface. Both modern, sans-serif typefaces.
Had to reduce line spacing from default 400 pt to 300 pt since it was too big. Created some blocks to measure identical space between lines and the text. Used grid for placement.
Used grid lines too adjust the elements. In this case I did not want to use rule of thirds since I was looking for a more symmetrical look.

Working with peer's critique:
First draft presented for initial critique
A draft with author's name
Variation based on critique. Added the falling graph that relates to the "broker" aspect of the idea. The eye here is supposed to be a reflection of the character. The cover appeared more flashy, but a little busy.

Final version:
I choose this version because it was less busy and the more nightmarish eyes suggested an exploration of an internal world rather than external effects on the character as in previous version. In additon, I felt that the red graph was unnecessary since the background already had a crack in it, which suggested a similar idea.
