The Resourcefulness of Everyday Design

1. In everyday life ruler is used not only to measure things, but also to cut paper. This is not an intended use of a ruler and ,clearly, such utility  appeared out of sudden need to cut paper and/ or lack of scissors. Not only ruler could be used to do it, any flat solid object could work, for example: a book or a DVD case. Here is an example for a quick and dirty way to cut paper used by many in school or at work on a daily basis.

2. Reoccurring pattern of everyday design is hanging things on things that were not made to have something hang on them. Chairs, bed frame, door knobs often have jackets or towels hanging from them. In this case a student hanged his headphones and a control unit on a wire from a Torchère.

Identify a problem from your own life and ideate a solution

problem statment: Food that was cut on a cutting board spreads all over the cutting board and when its pushed off the board into the pan or trash can,  it misses the target. It needs to be directed towards the target.

1.1  Wooden or plastic cuting board base.

Plastic preferably as it needs to be light.

1.2 Route mechanism that folds the further it goes to bring all the

food together. Operated by being pushed forward.

1.3 Slots that drive the mechanism. Thin, and covered by transperent

plastic, so that food does not get stuck inside

2.1 Handle that drives the pushing mechanism. Push forward

fot it to fold.
